Keep a useful farrier visit log

Record the work, cost and next appointment after each visit.

Record what happened that day

Start each visit entry with the horse, date and farrier’s name. Note the work performed using the farrier’s description. Attach an invoice or photograph if it helps explain the entry. Keep observations separate from a diagnosis.

Useful notes can include which feet were worked on, the recorded shoeing or trimming details and anything the farrier asked you to watch. Do not infer a treatment plan from a photograph or copy another horse’s instructions.

Keep the next date separate

Record the next appointment or follow-up date that you agreed with the farrier. Do not turn an assumed interval into a confirmed appointment. A reminder can prompt you to book when the next visit is not yet arranged.

If the appointment changes, update the reminder. If a historical entry was wrong, add a correction rather than silently changing the history. Keep the original invoice when the corrected detail concerns cost or the work performed.

Track costs consistently

Use the same currency and distinguish the amount paid from an estimate. Decide whether a total includes a call-out charge or shared visit charge. If several horses share an invoice, record how you allocated the cost so the same expense is not counted twice.

Review several visits together when planning a budget. An unusually high or low entry may reflect extra work rather than a change in the normal price.

Use the record at the next visit

Before the farrier arrives, find the previous entry and any instructions. This saves searching through messages while the visit is underway. Send only relevant records if you change providers.

Tackroom keeps structured farrier records within the paid record features. Free care reminders can still help you remember an appointment. The free cost calculator can help you plan a budget using your own figures.
